James Jackson made a worthwhile trip to Kent for a 2nd time, I missed out at the last race on this circuit in the Elite race so I made sure I covered the best moves today, as it happens nobody or I could make a break Billy and I tried several time to get away, but we couldn't break from the bunch.

Horsmondon E/1/2/3 |
19/06/2011 |
A popular course with fast twisting roads along with some punchy hills, it is perhaps surprising that the Horsmonden circuit was last used over ten years ago by the South East RR league. However, was it going to be the fast roads that would favour the attacking style of some riders or would it be the swift punchy hills at the back end of the course that would split the bunch?
In the end it was neither! A moment of madness and skill would set the shape of the race. Towards the end of the second lap of six, a driver ignored advice from race marshals and continued to drive towards the oncoming bunch exiting out of a turning causing the riders to scatter with skilful bike handing they managed to avoid any nasty moments.
This in turn caused a significant split in the bunch. With all the elite riders in the first split the advantage was taken leaving the rest of the bunch to chase for the next couple of laps.
With two laps to go Andy Betts took advantage of a moment's hesitation from the others and headed off on his own.
Betts: "After I attacked I figured this may be too early, but an opportunity was there."
His cause was not helped by another motorist not giving way at a narrow bridge although the lead car was already on the bridge, the oncoming car stopped blocking the lead cars exit, bringing Andy to a momentary standstill.
Anthony Mole was also in hot pursuit of Betts, hoping to join forces to the finish. However they were soon joined by three others, Ian Field, Chris Macnamara, and John Veness. Now it was anybody's race again.
Field: "When we all got together I was expecting more attacking, but we all rode together for the last lap, in the last corner before the finish I was slightly ahead leading out, nobody came past me."

David Mclean, Pasta Montegrappa Zheroquadrav road his way into yellow today after getting to the original breakaway group that was being caught. With Alex Higham, WyndyMilla and fellow team mate Rowan the 3 forged ahead leaving David to do all the pace making for the last lap and a half. Having a good ride in the prolog and not conceeding to much time in the circuit race David was in a good posision for overall.
A bad day for Martin Smith, Primal Europe. Such was the pace in the early part of the race saw him loosing contact with the main bunch with others, calling on his team mates to to ride him back only to suffer a puncher. issues with the wheel change caused delay and promptly lost more time.

Chris McNamara showed he had the stamina and the legs to out sprint his breakaway partners to win this years Regional Championship 2011.
Photos
Over 70 riders,142km, 4 hills, with a nice cross wind lay ahead of the riders.
Good Stamina with strong legs were in order for todays event.
Jake Martin, Pendragon, headed off on a lone adventure after 2ks from the start. He survived 3 laps on his own until he was joined by 5 riders.
At the bunch end of the race Ian Paine, London Dynamo, and Allan Ridler, Team Cycle Kingdom were stirring things up with Darren Barclay , Artic Primier, they bridged the gap to the now 6 riders up front. This was seen As a dangerous move forcing a massive chase by the others.
After a cloud burst of rain the remander of the bunch had the breakaway group back insight.
The attacks started again for another lap until a group of 22 riders formed leaving the rest of the race in it’s wake. The circuit was starting to take it’s Toll as at one point there was 4 separate groups.
It wasn’t long before Alex Higham Allan Ridler were trying to stir things up again. It wasn’t until Chris McNamara, Ian Pain, and Nick Hutchison counted a moved that they managed to gain a gap, slowly they slipped away. they held a lead of 40 seconds leaving Alex Higham to do the lion share of the chasing. |

Working together the 3 maintained a lead over the chasing group. With 4 to 5ks to go it looked like there effort was doomed with the rest of the distance all up hill the chasing group was gaining back on them briefly poping into view in the distance. Through the last corner the chase group was about 35 seconds behind.
Were the 3 going to be caught on the line, would one of the 3 made a bid for glory on there own?
Ian was the first to show signs of fatigue, Nick was very poker faced behind his dark glasses, and Chris was looking calm keeping his composure tapping through to do his turn on the front with Nick.
They had enough of a gap to stay clear, Nick started the sprint, Chris found clean air to pass for the line.
Been wanting to win the regional’s for some time, I’ve always liked the event and always ride well. Tough course today, I new it was going to tough, so time my effort and saving energy keep the legs loose was going to be important.
My Team is going to Belgium for some kermises, looking forward to that, plus we have a guest ride at the Halfords Tour series at Colchester. Chris McNamara. Team Corley Cervelo. |

Brenchley E/1/2/3 Race 5 |
10/04/2011 |
Race 5 from South East Road Race League, E/1/2/3 112 Kilometers 10/04/2011.
It was a Pink morning for Kent as the WyndyMilla, MaxiFuel Team arrived in force for Sundays South East Road Race League (SERRL) with the support of Delaune CC at Brenchley.
Not many races in Kent are blessed with a down hill start, but as soon as the neutralized flag disappeared the hammer went down, anyone who wasn’t on their game was going to have a tough time.
At the end of the 2nd lap from the 112 ks race, 7 riders managed to stay away with a 40 second gap, finally the pace settled down, with an average speed of 48ks (30 miles an hour), the riders still another 11 laps of 13 race to complete, with another 11 more times up Knowle Lane Hill, to where the Finish was located.
Seeing the potential move of the breakaway, Tom Copland, Sigma Sport Specialized, emerged from a pack of chasers to bridge the gap to the leaders.
Scott Merrilees, WyndyMilla, Alex Higham, Wyndymilla, Andy Betts, La Fuga-Sigma Sport, Chris McNamara. Team Corley, Nick Abraham, Luke Wallis, La Fuga-Sigma Sport, Anthony Moye. CC Luton,
And soon to join Tom Copland, Sigma Sport Specialized.
Once Tom Copland joined the 7 leaders they started to distance them selves from a dwindling cashing bunch.
Alex Higham, Wyndymilla, not content with so many riders in the group put in a move on lap 6 to go it alone. It took nearly a lap for the group to bring back Alex.
By lap 10 the group was down to five, with occasional attacks by Tom, Alex, and Andy leaving Chris to do most of the chasing just to stay in contention.
3 laps to go the fireworks started again 3 of the now 4 riders were jumping one another. On the last lap a cease fire came as the 4 were matching each others attempts. It wasn’t long be fore Andy Bettets and a final go on the lower road before the last ascent of Knowle Lane Hill. Gaining a few bike lengths, Alex cut across and clawed himself to his wheel. A moment of hesitation for Tom and Chris meant the gap was too big to close at the bottom of the climb. Chris had paid the price of all the earlier chasing while Tom’s earlier efforts to go it along were starting to show.
As the hill steepened Alex Higham drew along side Andy Betts, looked at him then carried on to his first South East Road Race League win of the season.
What the riders said
Andy Betts, La Fuga-Sigma Sport
“Tough race, I’m pleased, had to race myself fit this year due to a lack of winter miles, Alex again was very strong”.
Chris McNamara Team Corley Cervelo
“I seemed to be on the back foot today, had to go with everything. WyndyMill, and Sigima Sport were well represented in the earlier part of the race”.

Biddenden 27/03/2011 update |
|
The most unexpected mechanical failure
Sunday’s finish line crash was at first thought due to a front brake caliper failure that may have jammed into the front wheel.
After looking at photos from the scene, on the run up to the line a rider is pictured with his foot free of the pedal as if pulled. A suspected cleat failure from the pedal during the start of the sprint resulting in the riders knee hitting the handle bars making loose balance instantly, similar to a chain snapping, of course the following riders would have no time to react such as the speed if the incident had nowhere to go but straight into one another.
Emails from the injured riders are at home recovering and like true bike riders are keen to start turning their legs again.

Biddenden 27/03/2011 |
|
A determined Paul Hone of Addiscombe cc rode his way to a solo victory at the SERRL 3/4/J/W Biddenden road race on Sunday 27/03/2011.
One of the few flatter courses in Kent enjoyed by those who like a bit of a sprint. Sundays was going to be about the escape artist. During the 107klm race there was plenty of attacking and chasing. But many attempts by riders to distance themselves never gained much of an advantage, until Paul Hone, Addiscombe cc, made yet anther attempt to go it alone. With a lap to go he maintained an advantage of 45 seconds, which came down to 20 seconds on the main road towards Bethersden. Complacency was the bunches downfall as Paul maintain his steady pace the bunch eased confident that a late charge for the finish would result in a bunch sprint.
Second place was all the bunch could race for as they came into view, with the boys from Bigfoot were spearheading the bunch for the.
Jeremy Bishop, Bigfoof cc and Rhys Glegg, Kingsnorth RT opened up the sprint. Rys came out from behind Jeremy’s wheel to make his sprint for the line suddenly went down as if the ground had opened up, with 40 riders behind jostling for position ploughed in on Rhcoys.
Four riders downed with injury the rest managed to find an escape route.
No touch of wheels, no argy bargey, or bad bike handling.
The resulting accident came about from a front brake calliper failure.
Reports from the injured riders are that the 4 riders are well, and at home nursing their injuries.
The Team at SERRL wish them a speedy recovery. |
